DWWF January 21 Newsletter

This month marks the beginning of a year-long celebration of the one hundred year anniversary of women's suffrage in Washington State at the Kirkman House Museum!  This movement helped establish Washington State as a progressive member of the Union, becoming the fifth state to grant equal rights to both men and women.
The Kirkman House has an entire year of exciting activities planned to honor this avant-garde anniversary beginning with an exhibit entitled Catharine Paine Blaine: Seneca Falls and the Women's Rights Movement in Washington State.  Opening January 13, 2010, the exhibit tracks the women's rights movement from the 1848 meeting in Seneca Falls where the "Declaration of Sentiments" was drafted declaring women's independence from the "absolute tyranny" of men.
The exhibit at Kirkman House Museum will detail the trials and tribulations faced by Catharine Paine Blaine, from her signing of the document, to her travels and life spent in the Washington Territories, as well as the lives of her contemporaries both back east and in the wild west.  Stop by the museum to see the latest exhibit - as always admission is by donation only and families are welcome.

A Message From Our President

Our last Executive Committee meeting of 2009 included a routine review of the year's operations and budgets. We were pleasantly surprised.

2009 was a good year for the DWWF. We began the year with considerable uncertainty over the economic times.  With careful budget adjustments and attention to details, we ended the year with our program intact and our finances on solid ground. Better than that, we are optimistic about 2010 and are making plans for stronger programs and new events.

But the DWWF is a lot more than just a balanced budget and well attended events.  Our success is the direct result of a great staff. Each deserves thanks.

All of the work of the Foundation comes together in the work of our many volunteers.  The strength and breadth of our program is a direct result of the skills and enthusiasm of our volunteers.

2009 was a very good year for Downtown Walla Walla.  Thanks to all of you who made it happen.

Where In the World is

Elio Agostini?

Elio was in Olympia earlier this week to attend a quarterly meeting of Washington State Main Street managers. Part of the meetings was a legislative open house to give our elected representatives a chance to discuss efforts to save the Main Street program. Here Elio is pictured with Representatives Terry Nealey (R) and Maureen Walsh (R). Organizers of the effort to save the state program remain hopeful. We here at the DWWF will keep you posted.
