Flower Basket Support

The flowers are here! Earlier this month the City of Walla Walla installed the hanging flower baskets on several streetlight poles on Main Street and several side streets. This program is funded by the Downtown Foundation at a cost of $8,000. This covers the creation, installation and daily maintenance of the flower baskets—May through September. Several downtown businesses contribute to this fund with donations towards the hanging baskets. Stop in and thank them for going above and beyond with their support of these flowers that make downtown more pleasant for all.

Salumiere Cesario has new hours! Now, on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights you get your cheese fix or choose from a small-plate menu until 8pm. Salumiere is also opening early on Saturday at 10 am to accommodate the Downtown Farmers Market traffic.

3rd Annual Rockin’ the Lowboy Festival is June 29 this year with all proceeds benefiting the Wee Willy Music Enterprise, a non-profit dedicated to the development of music education of youth. The festival happens at the Outdoor Festival Area located at 1106 Sapolil Road. Sapolil Cellars’ Downtown Venue will be closed in order to support attendance at this non-profit Festival event. Tickets are $20 and available online or at Sapolil Cellars. Food and drinks are available for purchase, 21 + please. Free camping available.

The Downtown Foundation and Inland Cellular, in cooperation with the City of Walla Walla Parks & Recreation Department, the Walla Walla Public Library, Walla Walla Dental Group and the Walla Walla Sweets, present the Summer Family Movie at Borleske Stadium! This Saturday, it’s ‘The Goonies!’ A band of kids discover an old Spanish map that leads them on an adventure to unearth the long-lost fortune of One-Eyed Willie, a legendary 17th-century pirate (rated PG). The show will begin around 8:45 p.m.; the stadium opens for guests at 8:00 p.m. Concessions available – bring lawn chairs and blankets! This event is free and open to the public.

The Downtown Farmers Market is getting fuller with new produce vendors starting to come! With all of the great variety, customers should be able to have the market as their one stop spot.

Sarah has now been with the Downtown Farmers Market for the last two Saturdays.
Most of you have been introduced to her and I am thrilled to have her supporting your market. She is a student intern from Whitman College who also plays basketball for the school. Sarah will be helping in all aspects of the market, so make sure you get to know her.

Laura, the gleaner from BMAC, has been very busy as more produce vendors are coming to market. I have been so grateful for her help since the start of market providing information about the gleaning program and helping with the Downtown Farmers Market booth selling our t-shirts, hats and the very popular totes! Laura is collecting food at the end of the day to take back to the Food Bank, so make sure she has that food that is still good, but you don’t want to take back home!

Music this week will be “Vicky and the Velvetones” both days. Should be fun!

Registration for the 5th Annual Rock Camp is open! The Walla Walla Public Schools Music Department and Lincoln High School host a one week performance camp, from July 29 – August 2 designed to give attendees the experience of producing a Rock ‘n Roll concert. The Downtown Foundation is pleased to welcome Whitman senior Sarah Anderegg to the office for the summer. Sarah is a sociology major and a member of the women’s basketball team, who played in the 2013 NCAA D-III Elite Eight championships.

This is the thrid year the Downtown Foundation has been fortunate to participate in the Whitman College Summer Intern program. Sarah will spend part of each week working with Cheryl Thyken at the Farmers Market, and the balance of her days at the office. Stop by and say hello!
